Online VAT Calculator for Add VAT, Ex VAT and Reverse VAT

A1 VAT Calculator is designed to make VAT calculations fast and clear. Enter an amount, select whether the price excludes VAT or includes VAT, choose the VAT rate, and the calculator will show the net amount, VAT amount and gross total. This makes it useful as a VAT calculator, ex VAT calculator, online VAT calculator and reverse VAT calculator in one simple tool.

Add VAT to a net amount

Use Add VAT when you have a price before VAT and need the VAT-inclusive total. For example, a net amount of £100 at 20% VAT becomes £120 gross, with £20 VAT added.

Remove VAT from a gross amount

Use Remove VAT when a price already includes VAT and you need to work backwards. This is often called a reverse VAT calculator or VAT backwards calculation.

Popular VAT rates

The calculator includes common rates from 0% to 27%, including 5%, 20% and 23%. You can also enter a custom VAT rate for quotes, international checks or unusual tax scenarios.

Built for everyday use

Use it for invoices, receipts, price checks, supplier quotes, contractor estimates, bookkeeping checks and quick VAT calculations from your phone, tablet or desktop.

How to calculate VAT

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by the VAT rate, then add that VAT amount to the original price. To remove VAT, divide the gross amount by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. For 20% VAT, a gross price is divided by 1.20 to find the ex VAT amount.

VAT Calculator FAQs

What is a reverse VAT calculator?

A reverse VAT calculator removes VAT from a VAT-inclusive price. It shows the original ex VAT amount and the VAT amount included in the gross price.

Can I use this as an ex VAT calculator?

Yes. Choose Remove VAT, enter the gross amount, select the VAT rate, and the calculator will show the ex VAT figure.

What does ex VAT mean?

Ex VAT means the price before VAT has been added. If something is £100 ex VAT at 20%, the VAT is £20 and the total including VAT is £120.

What does inc VAT mean?

Inc VAT means VAT is already included in the displayed price. Use the reverse VAT option to split the total into net price and VAT amount.

Can I use a custom VAT rate?

Yes. Select Custom, enter your own percentage, and the calculator will use that rate for adding or removing VAT.

Which VAT rate should I use?

For UK calculations, 20% is the standard rate for many goods and services. Some items may be 5%, 0%, exempt, or outside the scope of VAT, so check the correct rate for your transaction.

How do I calculate 20% VAT manually?

To add 20% VAT, multiply the net amount by 1.20. To remove 20% VAT from a gross price, divide the total by 1.20.

Can I use this for invoices and quotes?

Yes. It is useful for checking invoice totals, quotes, supplier costs and receipts. It helps with the arithmetic, but it does not replace accounting or tax advice.
